Êta programa que eu gosto!

Broadcasted for more than 30 years, Viola, Minha Viola (TV Cultura) started in April, 1980, presented by the radio broadcaster Moraes Sarmento and by the composer Nonô Basílio. In August of that year, Inezita was invited to share the stage with Moraes, in a partnership that lasted until his death, in 1998. The main goal was to open space to “caipira” and folk music, with 35 original shows per year in average. Invited artists were carefully chosen, either young artists that deserved attention or famous and popular ones, such as As Galvão, Liu & Léu, Renato Teixeira and Almir Sater.

On the stage of Viola, Minha Viola, respecting the essence of “caipira” music was of outmost importance for Inezita, who asked artists invited to bring acoustic instruments, distant from the present sertanejo environment. Until today, two years after the death of the singer, records arrive in the TVstation on her behalf, so wide was the effects of her work.

The audience at the recordings was faithful, who not only was regularly present, but also carried a affective relationship with Inezita. The show schedule included a time dedicated to the fans, who frequently gave her gifts.

Inezita Barroso, the life [chapter: Êta programa que eu gosto!]

By Paulo Freire*

* Curator of Ocupação Inezita Barroso, Paulo Freire tells the story of a 90-year-old lifetime, full of music and storytelling. Divided into six chapters (The girl, The family, The artist, The researcher, Ohh, how I love this show! and A legacy), the narratives spread through the site, mapping the life of one of the most important artists of Brazilian popular culture. Welcome to the beginning of this beautiful journey.

In 1980, Inezita made the debut of Viola, Minha Viola show at TV Cultura, presented by Moraes Sarmento and Nonô Basílio. After participating as invited singer, she was called to share the leadership with Sarmento. In the same year, she was the head of the show herself.

Viola, Minha Viola is the oldest show of Brazilian TV, running for 37 years! How is it possible to explain that the television is still reprising shows, even two years after Inezita passed away? How deep did she touch people, so that they remain faithful? If we look in perspective, these 37 years of Viola, with a cultural industry so moved by fashionisms and commercial interests, it’s sure that Inezita led an incredible war in favor of Brazilian popular culture in our media. A great amount of artists and musical bands were born and established in the market thanks to her show, responsible for the greater audience at TV Cultura.
