The 20thOcupação presents Laerte
Cartoonist and illustrator, Laerte Coutinho is the subject of the 20th edition of Ocupação. Her intense output in the field of drawing and narrative, which began in 1970, reveals a vast body of work that is creative and above all critical, good natured and elegant in the manner it approaches our society’s political, philosophical and psychological issues.
Her work is disseminated by various media outlets in many fields and its importance goes beyond the world of art, encompassing union movements as well as gender and prejudice issues.
Cartoonist and artist Rafael Coutinho, who is also Laerte’s son, was the natural choice to be the exhibition’s curator, and set designer Fred Teixeira was responsible for creating the exhibition galleries.
The result is more than 2,000 works (including approximately 300 originals) and a general overview of the labyrinth that Laerte builds. Visitors will have access to stories of the various phases of her career and will encounter characters that she created, such as the Piratas do Tietê, the Muchacha, the residents of O Condomínio, Deus, Overman, Muriel (Hugo in drag) and Los 3 Amigos (in partnership with Angeli and Glauco).
Ocupação Laerte also unfolds on the web (itaucultural.org.br/ocupacao), making available information, interviews and photos of other works by Laerte.
With this Ocupação, Itaú Cultural celebrates more than five years of the program that creates a dialogue between the new generation and the groundbreaking creators, strengthening the institute’s goal of preserving the memory of cultural production in Brazil.
