Discover all the Occupations The 16th edition of Ocupação showcases the work and life of a man of the theater, an artist who played a part in important moments in the history of theater in Brazil: the actor, director and producer Sergio Britto. Conceived as an installation that simulates the experience of a theater, the exhibition is comprised of a documentary with scenes from Britto’s works, family photos and an overview of the most important facts of his career. Dealing with the memories of an artist of this importance and depth is an intense, revealing and affectionate exercise.
Sergio Britto (1923 – 2011) worked in theater, film, television and opera. He founded the Teatro dos Doze with Sergio Cardoso. He was a member of the Teatro de Arena, the Teatro Maria Della Costa and the Teatro Brasileiro de Comédia theater companies. Together with Fernanda Montenegro, Fernando Torres and Ítalo Rossi, he founded the Teatro dos Sete. When the group disbanded, he created his own company, Sergio Britto Produções Artísticas, and produced plays with Amir Haddad, one of the creators of the Teatro Oficina. Later, with Paulo Mamede and Mimina Roveda, he founded the Teatro dos Quatro.
In parallel with his career in theater, Sergio created ‒ with Fernanda Montenegro, Nathália Timberg, Cacilda Becker and Bibi Ferreira, among others ‒ the Grande Teatro, a television theater program shown on the Tupi, Rio and Globo networks, which aired 386 plays, one a week, during nine years. He directed soap operas for Rio TV (three productions written by Nelson Rodrigues), Paulista TV and Globo TV, as well as Bibi Ferreira’s show. Britto was also an opera director and one of the founders of the Casa de Artes das Laranjeiras (CAL), a school for theater arts.
The Ocupação program is another initiative by Itaú Cultural to recover and preserve Brazilian artistic memory, in addition to supporting the digitalization, organization and publishing works by the program’s subjects. Created in 2009, the program has presented exhibitions paying tribute to Nelson Leirner, Chico Science, Zé Celso, Regina Silveira, Abraham Palatnik, Rogério Sganzerla, Paulo Leminski, Haroldo de Campos, Flávio Império, Cildo Meireles, Ballet Stagium, Angeli, Antonio Nóbrega, Mario de Andrade and Nelson Pereira dos Santos.
Itaú Cultural
